In 1964 many competitive manufacturers were marketing some of their smaller cars as “sports” models; Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac & Chevrolet were offered as competition to Mustang. However the most basic comparison to Mustang shows that there was no competitive model, whether in price, size, styling, sports appeal, or equipment availability.
BUICK---the Buick Special is offered in a convertible model only. Std. Equipment is a 225 c.u. V-6 engine and a 3 speed manual transmission. A 2-speed A.T. is optional. To obtain front bucket seats, the customer must select the higher priced Skylark Hardtop at approx. $75 over the Special Convertible.
OLDSMOBILE---The Olds F-85 series offers a 2-door sedan for its “Sports Coupe” model. Std. Equipment includes the same 225 c.i.V-6 engine used in the Buick Special. A 3-spd manual tranny. is also standard, and a 2-speed A.T. is optional. The Conv. is available only in the more expensive Cutlass model.
PONTIAC---The Pontiac LeMans Hardtop & Convertible are the highest priced of the Tempest series & they are the only Tempest models in which bucket seats are available. Std. Equipment is a 215 C.I. in-line engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. The optional automatic transmission is a 2-speed.
CHEVROLET---Two series of Hardtops and Convertibles are offered---the Chevelle Malibu Super Sports models & the Corvair Monza Spyder models, A 194 c.i. in-line six & a 3-speed manual are standard equipment. A 2-speed A.T. is optional on the Malibu S.S. models. The Monza Spyder models are equipped with a turbocharged, flat 164 c.i. six & a 3-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. V-8 power or an automatic transmission is not available for the Monza Spyder models.
